Being creative Creativity is an essential part of wellbeing. Unfortunately many children and young people exercise insufficiently to benefit from positive factors like the ones mentioned above [ 5 , 6 ]. Think about how you welcome the children you work with each day. What they ask for are not huge challenges. Give children the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of materials and mark-making tools. Children and young people have told us about the barriers to good wellbeing their families face. This means that play is becoming deprioritised, particularly at the latter stages of primary school — despite it being vital for learning a range of well-being skills that cannot be taught. Research on the effectiveness of school-based physical activity interventions and other health interventions points out a number of methodological issues worth mentioning [ 17 ]. We hear consistently that children and young people want to be asked their views about things that matter to them, and they want their views to be listened to.

Every time we talk to them, from the youngest pre-schoolers to young adults, and whatever the topic, we are told that good relationships are very important in all aspects of their lives.
